Living by a schedule is an important part of managing a lifestyle. It is so important that as a young student it is engrained through the act of attending classes and turning in assignments on time.
It is also seen today in successful corporations that conduct the majority of their business through some sort of scheduled process. Planes, trains, and buses operate on a schedule to pick up travelers. Two of the largest logistics companies, United Parcel Service and FedEx transport packages to ensure they arrive on time.
And to what purpose? Well, mainly to honor the promise to have a package delivered on time or the safe arrival of a passenger.
When it comes to one’s personal life daily routine much of the same can be expected. With a well-thought-out plan and diligence to execute, one can expect to free up time to do the things they love as well as minimize those stressful moments.
What can be expected from a well-thought Routine?
- Develops discipline– If there were not a routine or schedule, processes would haphazardly get completed. Once a routine is set, executing that routine is all that is left to do. The commitment to show up to execute the routine develops discipline.
- Minimizes chaos– A well-executed routine minimizes chaos. When there is no order there is chaos. When a house is built, a hole is dug, and a footer is installed to help establish a foundation. From here the rest of the house is built. If a footer is not installed expect the structure to be not as structurally sound as it would be with the footer installed. A good routine reinforces soundness and minimizes chaos so that as it is executed one can move to the next in order.
- Fosters a positive expectation– When tasks have been completed one generally has a feeling of satisfaction. Routines are built around a variety of tasks when completed will provide a feeling of satisfaction that leads to an expectation. It is kind of a task-reward relationship.
- Reinforces productivity– Executed routines build good productivity habits. From day to day, one has goals set that need to be met. Tasks should be established to help meet those goals. Routines are developed to execute the tasks. This process, if followed through, allows for tasks to be completed so the next task can be addressed. Overall, as routines are executed, and tasks are completed one can look to meet their goals thus encouraging productivity.
Executed routines also encourage good mental health by defending against those stressful moments. Routines that promote timed breathing techniques, as well as rest periods, encourage a moment of pause to destress from a circumstance.
So, as we have entered the new year, if your routines are sloppy, reassess and readjust them to work for you. They are valuable to your success.
